In World War II, over the span of 9 months, 22,000 Japanese Canadians were forced from their homes, stripped of their belongings and denied their basic human rights. They were then imprisoned for the remainder of the war. These people presented no credible threat to the safety of the Canadian nation. Itâ€™s not acceptable in a time of war for the government to target civilians within their country from an enemy country just because of their ethnicity, Japanese Canadians were fully Canadian citizens and the Japanese had already proved their loyalty in World War I.

Shortly after the internment camps began an RCMP officer wrote a secret letter to a government agent stating â€œWe have had no evidence of espionage or sabotage among the Japanese in British Columbiaâ€. This demonstrates that the Japanese should not have been put in internment camps and the Canadian government was wrong.

Secondly, Japanese Canadian civilians had already shown their loyalty to Canada in World War 1. In World War 1 the Japanese Canadians wanted to prove that they were committed to Canada and wanted to protect the freedoms of their new country. Japanese Canadians and the black community formed the No 2 construction battalion. While they werenâ€™t allowed to fight they dug trenches and repaired roads. This is important to see because although they were given some of the worst jobs they still wanted to prove their loyalty.
