The story describes a woman named Eveline trapped to choose between living with her father, and escaping with a sailor named Frank. She is a moral middle-class Irish Catholic girl that would have lived around Joyce’s time. Eveline defies her father’s request to stop seeing this man; even secretly planning to run away and marry him in his home in Buenos Ayres. Her ultimate choice reflects Joyce’s own moralistic nature; questioning his life had he stayed and cared for the family like Eveline. Joyce’s perspective questions his duty to stay home from the point of view of a teenage woman living in Dublin around 1914 (Barnet).
Eveline is faced with possibly the biggest decision she would ever have to make. Deciding to leave her elderly father and run away with the man who she barely knew or stay and take care of her home and abusive father. Frank offers many “escapes” for Eveline. This man, Frank, had come to change Eveline’s life; desiring to marry her. Responsible for caring for her elderly father, Eveline felt torn to also be with Frank. However, with this desire to be with Frank, she continued to meet with him secretly without her father’s knowledge.
