James Joyce was born to a lower middle class family in Dublin, Ireland on 2 February 1882. He is considered to be one of the most influential writers of his time. Joyce’s father was a chronic alcoholic and the family struggled with poverty. As a young man in 1898, however, he was fortunate enough to attend University College Dublin. The University was ran by Jesuits; greatly influencing Joyce in his studies of English, French, and Italian. Joyce had a unique skill with literature. The story describes a woman named Eveline trapped to choose between living with her father, and escaping with a sailor named Frank. She is a moral middle-class Irish Catholic girl that would have lived around Joyce’s time. Eveline defies her father’s request to stop seeing this man; even secretly planning to run away and marry him in his home in Buenos Ayres. Her ultimate choice reflects Joyce’s own moralistic nature; questioning his life had he stayed and cared for the family like Eveline. Joyce’s perspective questions his duty to stay home from the point of view of a teenage woman living in Dublin around 1914 (Barnet).
Eveline is faced with possibly the biggest decision she would ever have to make.
