Jane Eyre Summary

The first part of the book tells the story of Jane since she was a little girl. Jane is an orphan girl that is forced to live with her cruel aunt, Mrs. Reed. During her childhood, Mrs. Reed does not treat her well; she focuses more in taking care of her own daughters and son. The only ones that are nice to Jane are Bessie and Mr. Lloyd, the apothecary. One day Jane is locked up because she defends herself when her cousin bullies her. She suffers a lot and Mr. Lloyd suggests sending her to school. Mrs. Reed accepts and sends her.
Her school’s name is Lowood School. Jane finds out that in this school life is harsh, because there is a very strict headmaster: Mr. Brocklehurst. He is ...

She then decides that she wants something new in her life, so she looks for a job and is hired as a governess at the Thornfield manor. She is in charge of teaching a French girl named Adèle. She stays with Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper, until one day the owner of the manor, Mr. Rochester, arrives. Jane and Mr. Rochester become acquainted, and he becomes very interested in her drawings. After having known each other for a while, Mr. Rochester tells the story of how he adopted Adèle to Jane. They start trusting each other. The last chapter from the first part ends when Jane performs a heroic gesture: during a fire, she saves Mr. Rochester’s life. But as soon as he is conscious, he runs to the third floor and states “he’s found it all out”. This is mysterious because Jane suspects someone started the fire, and Rochester found out who did. The chapter ends here with Mr. Rochester thanking Jane for saving his life ...
