Though Japanese women in Yoshimoto Banana's novel Kitchen represent the new youth culture prevailing in modern Japan, they are still very much confined by the restrictions of centuries old strict Japanese conventions and this influence of Asian culture is much too strong to get rid of easily. For this reason, most Japanese women are still facing some really tough decisions as they step into the 21st century and seek more independence and freedom. to bring the conflict between old values and new ones to the fore. This is what makes the book a less authentic source on real problems faced by freedom-craving youth of Japan today. The book talks about the lives of young girls solely from their point of view and this gives us a good idea of the type of youth culture that prevails in modern Japan. Japanese women are no longer willing to be considered symbols of Asian innocence and chastity. They are as interested in discovering their sexuality as their western counterparts with the only difference that they still have a centuries-old culture putting restrictions on them. Sadly though, while the author addresses the former, she fails to shed light on the latter more important aspect of women status in modern in Japan. Though she tries to address the problems of women, "(It's not easy being a woman"(41)), but they are more common in nature and not exclusive to Japanese women.
