Jerusalem: A Holy City

Jerusalem is Islam’s third most holy city, after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. These Muslims believed that in Jerusalem, Muhammad visited heaven from a site there. Muhammad was an Arab prophet who preserved the word of God in a sacred book called the Quran ( Arizona Geographic Alliance ). In Jerusalem at this spot, the Dome of the Rock was built. It was a golden domed shrine covering the stone from where Muhammad ascended to heaven. Muslims visit this dome today for religious purposes. There are also other Islamic religious sites in Jerusalem such as the ancient mosque called Al Aqsa. A mosque is a building where Muslims pray.
