Voices and visions, imagined and real, mingle and merge throughout Katherine Porter’s short story “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” as this hardy woman, one who has weathered so much, lives out her final moments. It is better to read the story and then watch the film because you are able to see the atmosphere the writer created turn into real life, not the opposite.
At first, the video was confusing. That is, until after I had read the story and then everything came together like a puzzle to make sense. However, even though the movie and the story differ to a certain extent, they both have the two jiltings that happen to Granny Weatherall. The first one happens when Granny Weatherall is on her deathbed surrounded by her children, the doctor and priest. When a memory of 60 years ago, the day she was jilted by her husband-to-be, could no longer be repressed by Granny Weatherall—“the thought of him was a smoky cloud from hell that moved and crept in her head . . ..” The second one is when the final sign she has been waiting for from Jesus never appears. “For a second time there was no sign. Again no bridegroom and the priest in the house . . . She stretched herself with a deep breath and blew out the light.”
If I would have read the story first, I would have been able to understand the movie, instead of it being confusing. Not only that, but I would have been able to see the entire picture. So, this brings me to the conclusion, if you want the real facts and complete ...
