Jing Mei In Two Kinds

Amy Tan, in her story of ‘Two Kinds’, draws ‘Jing-mei’ character as a symbol of all those children, who struggle to get their identity against their parents’ high expectation. Jing-mei is a nine years old girl living with her parents and struggling to become a prodigy to be her parent’s ideal child. This conflict results a rebellious independent spirit, who does not want to copy other remarkable children anymore to be a prodigy as her mother expected, instead of her own ability.
After losing everything in China, when Jing-mei parents come to her mother’s dream country America, she start to act like her mother wanted to make her as a remarkable child as she watched on TV. As time passed ...

(239). The dream of her mother led her to a lot of test and examples from the book “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”, or “Good Housekeeping”, “Reader’s Digest”. The mother keep trying to teach her daughter names of the cities, towns, countries like the wonder boy that she read in the book. After failing many of her mother’s prodigy tests, Jing-mei begins to hate them. One night after another failed test, she adopted “new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won’ts” (240). Jing-me decides that she is not going to let her mother change whom she is, so she stops trying to be a prodigy. She demonstrates her willfulness when she “performed listlessly,” and “pretended to be bored,” when presented with further tests (240). Jing-me’s headstrong attitude continues to stand in the way and keeps her from successfully learning to play the piano.
