John A. MacDonald


was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada in the years 1820 with his parents when he was five years old. He was educated at Midland District Grammar School and John Cruickshank School in Kingston, Ontario.
John A. McDonald was married in 1843 to Isabelle Clark and had two sons but one died when he was a small baby. His first wife died in 1856 and he remarried in 1867 to Susan Agnes Bernard and they had one daughter together in 1869. Their daughter suffered from a disease that caused her to have mental and physical handicaps. In his life he had a lot of troubles and stressful times and he was a very heavy drinker, and is caused him problems in his life.

the five provinces in the Maritimes. After this he was appointed Prime Minister of Canada and then won the federal election the next year in 1867 for the Conservative Party. He wanted to build a strong nation so he began the Intercolonial Railway in 1871 that ran from Halifax to the Pacific Coast, and included Canada's two new provinces Manitoba and British Columbia and the North West Territories. It is because of him that we have the Canadian Pacific Railway today as well as Banff National Park in Alberta.
John A. McDonald help to protect Canada products by starting a system called tariffs. This was to protect Canada from letting other countries from bringing in products, this really helped Canada to grow. He had problems when he was the Prime Minister and he was asked to resign and lost the election in 1874 but got back into power again in 1878. In March 1891 he won a fourth election but died three months later on June 6, 1891 in Ottawa, Ontario.
