John Proctor: A Flawed Hero

John Proctor is the protagonist in Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. The small town of Salem is in hysteria due to the accusations in witchcraft. John Proctor was persistent, honest, full of integrity and was simply, a man with pride that fulfills the requirements of a "flawed hero" by his actions throughout the story. John Proctor had a ultimate purpose in the play that has a stable characteristic, as a character that is altimately good and the stages he undegoes throught the play made him to be considered a hero in the play.

of Elizabeth Proctor. He cheats on his wife but manages to maintain her loyalty. Proctor realizes there is only one way to stop all the witch hysteria in Salem, and that would be to confess his sin of adultery. Although he knows he should, he continues to be determined not to confess until he has make a efforts to save his wife to prove Abigail is lying in court.

For many reasons, John Proctor is a good man. In he's effort of saving his wife, prove he's a hero. He confess his adultery to keep the good of his wife. After he confesses, he encourages his wife to do the same, "Elizabeth, tell the truth! Elizabeth, I have confessed it!" Proctor said. He confesses his sin, only because he is looking out for the good of the community, and others around him. He hates that his name is tarnished, but feels that God will forgive him for it. Later, his honest shows again when he tells Abigail his true feelings by saying that he would cut off his arm before reaching for her again. ...
