As John Locke has once said,” If a government fails its obligations or violates peoples natural rights, the people have the right to overthrow that government.” In the early to mid 1900’s, Kenya was a victim of Imperialism by England. Not only was the imperialism oppressing the people’s culture, but it also caused there to be over 22,000 homeless blacks in the Nairobi streets. Also unemployment was a 20% and the jobs provided by the Europeans paid so little that no one even bothered to take them. Kenya was in desperate need and needed independence. Without Jomo Kenyanatta’s influence on his people, the unjust imperialism in Kenya could not have ended.

The Mau Mau group’s actions were vital to the success of independence in Kenya. Since about 1948, the Mau Mau was behind ever anti-imperialist act that occurred. In 1950, the British outlawed anything that had to do with the Mau Mau. At the same time, the authorities were trying to convince Kenyatta to speak against the Mau Mau. However, he refused which allowed the rebellion to occur. In fact, he encouraged the rebellion by saying that Africa belonged to the Africans. In the summer of 1952, Mau Mau attacked the British Settlements. Over 13,000 people died. On October 21, Jomo Kenyatta was sentenced arrested and eventually sentenced to 7 years in prison. If Kenyatta had obeyed the Europeans orders, Kenya would probably still be colonized.
