was born on December 3, 1857 in the Russian occupied city of Berdyczów, Ukraine to an impoverished, highly patriotic Polish noble family. Joseph was " only child born of Evelina Bobrowska (1832–1865) and Apollo Korzeniowski (1820–1869); a writer and translator of many authors' works including Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, and Victor Hugo,"( Lirkkonen) As a child, Joseph would often be seen reading novels by these and several other writers. His father encouraged him to read widely in Polish and French. The Korzeniowski's belonged to the polish noble gentry, szlachta, during an extremely variable time period in which the Ukraine was under Tsarist autocracy. The family was kept under constant surveillance by the government for Evelina and Apollo's nationalist ideals. In 1861 Conrad's father was arrested by Imperial Russian authorities in Warsaw for helping organize what would become the January Uprising of 1863–64, and was exiled to the Russian city of Vologda.
