Joy Luck Club

Joy Luck Club is a very interesting book about four different Chinese women and their daughters. We learn about each of the mother’s lives in China and their love relationships, which eventually lead them to America. We then get to learn about each of their daughters lives in America and their love relationships and how each of their mother’s pasts affects them now. This book is very interesting because we get to learn how life was in different time periods and in different countries, and even though things have changed over time the past still affects the future. These mother’s stories relate very much to the actual historical realities.

Even though June follows a lot of American ways now and doesn’t really understand mahjong or enjoy it she follows the Chinese tradition and plays it. History shows that these events matched up correctly to China in the 1930’s. At this time the Second Sino-Japanese War was being- fought between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan from 1937–1945. The country was tore apart, many people died, families got separated, and some people moved to America. Also I found out that Mahjong was a real game that was popular in China. Mahjong was supposed to be created by Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, who developed the game in about 500 BC. And from the 1920’s this game began to be brought to America and played, but there were different versions based on the culture playing it, which we also learned in the book (Hays).
