Juliette Low was born on October 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia. Her parents named her Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon but no one called her that. Her nickname was Daisy. She was born during the Civil War, which was very hard on her. Daisy’s father was a southerner fighting against the Yankees. She had hardly any food and wore raggy clothes. She had three sisters and two brothers. Every summer Daisy and her family visited her Aunt Eliza and twenty cousins in North Georgia. They spent most of their time outside. The last school she went to was Charbonniers School in New York City where she had her “coming out ceremony” which meant that she was no longer called a girl, but a lady.
Juliette Low founded an organization in 1912 and named it Girl Scouts. General Sir Robert Baden-Powell, a British military hero inspired her to start the organization. When he started the Boy Scouts, 6,000 girls registered as well. Girl Scouts was originally called Girl Guides. The first two Girl Guide troops were started in London.
