Julius Caesar: The Corruption Of Power

One of the themes of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar can be
said to be “Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Indeed, instances of corruption can be seen in the actions of Caesar, of
Mark Antony, and of Caius Cassius. The way they abused their power either
led to an assassination, a self-destruction, or a tyranny rule.
Caesar had seized power from Pompey and Pompey’s sons, in order to
take control of Rome. He killed them in a battle and returned back home
during the Feast of Lupercal. This was the day he gained authority of
Rome and then his power was now out of control. Flavius and Marullus were

despotic attitude, when Metellus Cimber begs him to reverse his brother’s
banishment. Caesar selfishly replied that this request “might fire the
blood of ordinary men…know, Caesar doth not wrong…”. He refers to himself
in the third person, and considered his status to be next to the gods. He
believed he was never wrong and his judgment was always correct.

Antony loved Caesar dearly. When Caesar was assassinated, Antony’s
ruthless side showed. He was now thirsty for revenge and played with the
mob’s emotions in order to get what he wanted; he did not care who he was
hurting. He reveals his plan to create civil strife throughout Italy and
will blame it on the conspirators, and explains how it is Caesar’s spirit
getting his revenge. During this civil war, “infants quartered with the
hands of war…this foul deed shall smell above the earth with carrion men,
groaning for burial.” Rome will be turned upside down, and Antony will
