Julius Caesar – Victim Of Tragic Flaw

Tragic flaw can best be defined as “ the unrealized flaw of a character, which leads to the downfall of that character.” In Julius Caesar, Caesar is basically the ruler of Rome. He’s very compassionate, and most of all, very trusting of others. It is this, his undying trust and compassion for others that leads to his tragic downfall and death. The best example of the phrase “tragic flaw” in the play Julius Caesar is the character Julius Caesar himself.

Caesar cared very much for all Romans, and always openly expressed his compassion for them. An example of this display of affection is when Caesar is on his way to the Senate. Artemidorus is desperately trying to get his attention to read a warning of the conspirators, but Caesar does not listen or heed the man’s plea because he feels that he should take care of the people before worrying about himself. It is this grave mistake and tragic error that costs Caesar his life. Had he listened, and shown a little self-interest, Caesar’s life might have been spared. Caesar is a hero to Rome because of his compassion for his country. It is so ironic that his tragic flaws, trust and compassion, are qualities that are valued so greatly in people.
