1. Opening credits sequence: Juno is seen strolling through a black-and-white, cartoon landscape (scenery). Images of her environment flash by unnoticed by her (for example, the track team runs past, including Bleeker). This, as well as the accompanying folk-style music, give us an insight into the character of Juno. Many things circulate on the periphery of her consciousness at the moment but she is distracted and finds the scenery meaningless. 2. Introduction of parents/stepmother: This is done using the technique of voiceover. This verbal technique has the advantage of filling in gaps in the story - in this case, it gives us a backstory, accompanied by a montage of images. We get a further insight into Juno's character when she uses her dry, sarcastic humour and sophisticated command of language to describe her family in belittling terms. This gives us a sense that Juno is exasperatedly fond of her father (Mac) - "Now he's just your average H-Vac specialist" - but feels superior to him; has abandonment issues with her mother - "Thanks a heap, Coyote Ugly. This cactus-gram stings even worse than your abandonment"; and is fairly scathing about her stepmother (Bren), who works in a nail salon and is obsessed with Weimaraners (dogs). Bren is concerned for both Mac and Juno and we see that she is maybe not quite as clam as she seems at first when she says "somebody else is gonna find a precious blessing from Jesus in this garbage dump of a situation."
