Karen Louise Erdrich


In 1954, was born to a Chippewa Indian mother
and German-American father in Little Falls, Minnesota. She grew up in
Wahpeton, North Dakota as a member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Tribe.
Her family lived near the reservation where her parents worked as teachers
for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Louise believes that her interest in writing is due to her lack of
exposure to television and movies while she was growing up. She recalls
that her father gave her and her sisters the encouragement to write stories
by paying them a nickel for each story they wrote.
In 1972 she received a scholarship for Dartmouth College. This was

she learned about urban community life and took on
a new reference point, different from reservation life. She realized that
the different people she met had their own problems and confusions and that
she wanted to write about them.
Louise enrolled in an MA program at John Hopkins University. She
wrote poems and stories while she was there that incorporated her Indian
heritage which later became part of her books. She started sending her
work to publishers and most of them rejected her work.
She returned to Dartmouth as a writer in residence after she
received her masters degree. Michael Dorris was impressed with her work
when he attended one of her poetry readings. When he moved away, the two
kept in touch, sending their work back and forth with letters. In 1980
they both moved to New Hampshire and began collaborating on short stories.
