Karl Barth and the Distinction of the Word of God

Karl Barth was undoubtedly the most influential Swiss theologian of the 20[th] century, with an impact expanding far beyond Switzerland. He radically changed Protestant thought and his theology came to be known as the theology of crisis. Despite writing over 600 books and articles, Barth's ideas can best be understood by focusing on the one area, the three-fold doctrine of the Word of God. Karl Barth put an immense amount of time and effort into clarifying the relationship between written Word, preached Word and incarnate Word.

theology at Bern University. Young Barth then continued his studies at some of the best universities in Germany: Berlin, Tubingen, and Marburg. Throughout these schools he came in contact with many significant theologians and ideas that would structure his thinking. Such as the idea of liberal theology which would be the inspiration of his early religious journey.

Following Barth's ordination he served as an assistant pastor to a German congregation in Geneva from 1909 to 1911. While in Geneva he came in contact, with what to him, were the foreign teachings of John Calvin. After that he served in the small village of Safenwil [HYPERLINK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safenwil] from 1911 to 1921. Near the end of his years in Safenwil Barth was deeply taken over by the tragedy World War I took on Europe. He came to reject the ideas of liberal theology, finding them unfit for the problems of his parish and to his own personal journey.
