As a young child I often heard my mom use the saying “keep your nose to the grindstone”, and often wondered what she really meant. I laughed at the thought of why anyone would want to grind his or her nose. Now that I am an adult I have come to understand what she was really trying to tell me when she used this phrase in reference to me and the importance of hard work.

as a lot of other things in life that I wanted but didn’t really need. Mom would always say “keep your nose to the grindstone” with your schoolwork because good grades are important to your future.
My mom was a high school dropout due to being a teenage mother, and as a result she worked extra hard for many years and obtained four degrees in her chosen career field. She always tried to get me to “keep my nose to the grindstone”. I wished I had heeded her advice and worked hard. I am now forced to watching my mom, with her major health problems, struggle to pay for my educational expenses because I don’t make enough money to help me get ahead.
I wished I had listened when my mom said “keep your nose to the grindstone”. If I had then I would have gotten good grades, and then I would have had access to scholarship funds for college.
