“Killing Lincoln”, written by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, is a true tale about the bloodiest war in United States history. It is an accurate depiction of the Civil War and the assassination of the president, Abraham Lincoln. The novel begins with an overview of the North and South army’s war strategies and the battles that were fought. The book explores the plot to kill Lincoln and other men of high status by John Wilkes Booth and his band of blood thirsty accomplices. The novel brought to light the living hell that was the civil war. Even though the book was written in a matter-of-fact manner, several emotions are inspired by the story. One being the intense hatred a whole nation had for the assassin John Wilkes Booth. This is made evident in this quote (pg. 298). In addition, thoughts of sympathy were raised for the convicted conspirer Mary Surratt. This made clear in this quote (pg. 281). Lastly, pity for the most powerful man in the world, Abraham Lincoln, is experienced. Having struggled for years to keep his country together and have “one destiny”, this quote sums up his life and eventual death (pg. 207).
