This quote from Fredrick Douglas shows that his mistress, despite her higher status, treated him as any other human would want to be treated. She is a prime example of how masters during this time period looked at the color of skin as just another color. The skills she taught him helped him to become the famous poet, writer and advocator of freedom. Douglas is just one of many slaves who were taught to read and write even though they were African American. One article stated, “Some masters’ wives and/ or daughters educated many slaves at night in shadowy rooms and read by firelight” (7).
