King Lear: A Story Of Blindness
King Lear is a story of blindness. Blindness caused by an inability to see past oneself, an inability to see the true nature of those one loves, and what happens when the blinders come off and things are “seen” as they really are. In this essay, I will discuss a passage in Act IV, Scene 1, where Edgar sees his father, the Earl of Gloucester, after Gloucester has been blinded by King Lear’s daughter, Regan, and her husband, the Duke of Cornwall.

sent for.” When watching the play, the viewer sees Edmund’s reaction to his father’s description, and he definitely does not look happy. Even though Gloucester knows his two sons, he believes the worst of Edgar, and what Edmund says, all too easily. I would think that Gloucester would have had some previous experience with the ways of his sons, and not believe everything that Edmund says about Edgar, without talking to Edgar first. Perhaps, after seeing Regan and Goneril lie to the King, Cordelia’s disinheritance and the banishment of Kent for his “honesty,” Gloucester is primed for manipulation by Edmund. In Act I, Scene 2, he laments the many problems of the world, and he includes the “bond cracked ‘twixt son and father” among them. At times, Gloucester seems to be trying to fight what Edmund is telling him about Edgar.
