Knowledge VS Intelligence

The words knowledge and intelligence are often defined as one in the same, however, it is important to recognize that knowledge is simply knowing facts while intelligence involves much more and is quite possibly more important. Intelligence contains the ability to apply knowledge, learn, understand, and deal with new situations.
In William Golding’s article “Thinking as a Hobby”, he speaks of three different levels of thought. Grade three thinkers are those who simply repeat what they have been taught. Repeating is not thinking for themselves; they are simply not able to come up with new ideas. They cannot even apply their knowledge to new problems. They only echo what they have ...

in which Plato declares, ‘let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened.” He goes on to discuss men in a world of darkness who can only guess what the shadows are. The truly intelligent would see these shadows and formulate an idea as to what they are. A somewhat intelligent person or a grade two thinker would be the man that is brought into the light and enlightened. He then goes back and applies what he has seen toe the shadows and determines where they come from. A person who functions entirely by fact is the one who cannot make a guess because they have never seen anything such as this and cannot even attempt to formulate a solution.
It seems as though many people cannot formulate their own solutions and are only able to repeat that which they have learned. Knowledge and intelligence are much like receiving and earning.
