Similarly, author Molly O'Neill affirmed in "The New Neighborhood..." that the Islamic dietary laws state, "the animal must be treated gently". Both religions require the knives used to slaughter the animals to be extremely sharp, so that they are able to kill in a single slice (Blatner and Falcon 55). In the aftermath, to make the slaughter Halal, "the blood must be completely drained from the carcass" (O'Neill); the same must be done to make it Kosher.
