Most community colleges have programs that are a year in length if prerequisites are completed before beginning the program. The growth of diploma programs has risen exponentially from seven pilot schools to more than 800 within the last 50 years (Mahaffey). The nurses who graduate from this program generally hold a certificate and are employed at a large number of institutions such as nursing homes, rehab centers and doctors' offices. Registered nurses begin at the level of a two year associates degree, which can also be obtained through a community college.
