Lady Macbeth's Downfall

The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play about the downfall of a once noble warrior named Macbeth. However, most people do not see that he is not the only character in the play who has a major downfall. His wife Lady Macbeth also has a tragic fall. It is very clear that Lady Macbeth is also a tragic figure in the way she convinces Macbeth to kill King Duncan and commits suicide because of her guilt.
At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare portrays Lady Macbeth as an evil woman with a sour demeanor. She comes off that way too. When King Duncan comes to have dinner and spend the night, Lady Macbeth puts on a façade and tells Macbeth to “look like th’ innocent flower, but be ...

it. However, Lady Macbeth decides this is not enough and comes up with the plan to kill Duncan. Most people, in their right mind, do not go out and decide to kill people in order to get their way.
As a Lady, Lady Macbeth is expected to be caring and loving but she is the exact opposite. While most woman would care for a baby, Lady Macbeth states “How tender it is to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, and dashed the brains out” (I, 7). This shows that she is not a normal, caring Lady. As Queen, she is obliged to be proper. She should not have evil thoughts such as killing the king. As Queen, she should understand the importance of being king. This might be one of the reasons she began to feel so guilty about killing Duncan. As Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth is forced into doing whatever will suit Macbeth. If he wishes to become king, it is up to her to figure out how to help him achieve that. Loyalty ...
