Law Caters to Men

After a few short weeks I have found one thing that really sticks out in my mind about law. Law caters to the elite but more specifically men. I always knew that women had extremely limited rights back in the early days of America but I never realized how severely limited they were. The text illustrates multiple readings that clearly demonstrate this idea.
The first case that immediately caught my attention with regards to this topic was Thornton and Wife v. The Suffolk Manufacturing Company (1852). when in her eyes she did nothing to be refused one. The other employees of the company that testified, and happened to be men, all claimed that she was discharged for improper conduct. This conduct was never clarified though which leads me to believe that the other employees chose to keep quiet out of safety for their own jobs and for the company. The owner also claimed that that he would rather spend the $5,000 that would eventually be required for a lawsuit rather than give her the line. This shows that the owner knows the power he possesses among his workers but also in the town. If he is willing to spend what was an enormous amount of money at the time to protect his reputation and way of operating then he must know that he is going to win the case. He can spend the money and have his corporate lawyers come in and knock the case out in minimal time while the poor woman must claw her way to the end only to a defeat which was inevitable all along.
