The most commonly abused illicit drug in our country. A medically beneficial plant that may be able to help thousands with their pain, and an illegal drug that is smuggled into our country on a daily basis, marijuana is on everyone’s mind. What should America do about this problem?
In the beginning, or rather not the beginning but the 1930’s, people were allowed to have marijuana in America -- without there being penalties or fines. In 1936 the Federal Bureau of Narcotics reported and increased amount of people smoking marijuana, a number that further increased in 1937. President Obama has since declared the term “counterproductive”. In 1973 the Drug Enforcement Agency or DEA replaced the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. In the CSA, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I drug, along with heroin, MDMA, and acid. (Cocaine is listed as a Schedule II drug due to its use as a topical anesthetic.) According to the Act, a drug is listed under Schedule I if it has, “A high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical treatment in the US, and there is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug under medical supervision.” There are provisions in the law, which allow for testing and research of marijuana, however there are no large notable studies that have been conducted yet. However, it does not give an age for young. The damage caused to the lungs by marijuana smokers, is said to be typically worse than those of cigarette smokers, because marijuana smoke is supposed to be inhaled and held in for longer periods of time. There is a 20-100% increase in heart rate right after smoking the drug, and this can last for up to three hours. This can be bad for those with high blood pressure, putting them up for increased risk of heart attack after smoking. However, there is proof that it has medical potential.
