Life Long Friendship

Approximately fifty years ago, I met five boys at kindergarten in the city of Nashville. What makes this fact somewhat unusual is that the other night, I met them again for dinner. Somehow, through all these years, the six of us have survived the mine field of holding on to friends and we are still together.
"The boys", as we call ourselves, began having monthly dinners a few years ago at a time when we all wanted to assure ourselves that the last mine in the mine field toward real friendship - apathy, didn't dilute our special circle of friendship that had spanned over four decades.

Of course, not everyone can maintain friends from our childhood as I have been able to do. People are mobile, they move from city to city or merely change neighborhoods. Yet, regardless of the length of the relationship, we all have a need for friendship and continually strive to make close and true friends in our lives.

If our immediate family can be called the body of love, then our friends are its' wings. While new friendships are equally significant and meaningful, old friendships are nurtured, as well as sustained, by a curious fact. Growing up together, people really get to know each other. The facades and defenses that are rigidly in place as adults are practically non-existent in childhood and our true selves stand out. Sometimes, like a sore thumb.
