Locked Up Over Argument

"Ballad of The Landlord" is a poem by Langston Hughes in which a landlord and his tenant get into an argument. In this poem, the tenant asks his landlord to fix the items that need to be repaired in his apartment and the landlord refuses to fix them until he collects the months rent. The tenant tells the landlord he will get his money once the repairs are made and in turn the landlord threatens to evict the tenant. The tenant then proceeds to threaten the landlord and the tenant gets arrested and is sentenced to 90 days in jail. Langston Hughes uses the literary devices of imagery, ...

It helps the reader understand that the living quarters in which the tenant lives in is not the best of shape and the landlord just refuses to fix the items that need repair. Also in stanza four, lines thirteen through sixteen state "What? You gonna get eviction orders?........... Throw it in the street?". The quotes aforementioned create the image of a tenant and landlord having a dispute over simple repairs. The quotes show, that even though the tenant and landlord are having a dispute over simple repairs, it is nothing new to the tenant and he hears things like this all throughout his life.
Langston Hughes decided to use very specific and particular diction while he was writing "Ballad of The Landlord". The form of diction that Hughes used is called colloquial diction. Colloquial diction is the speech patterns of a certain region or area of the world that relate to a certain group of people.
