Mary is â€śtied â€¦ upâ€ť against her will and is given â€śa hundred lashesâ€ť by her master, almost to the point where her master could â€śfaintâ€ť from exhaustion (Pringle 16-17). The descriptions of this experience make it hard for the reader to read without a wave of sorrow for Mary, and it is difficult to read what happens next during Maryâ€™s physical beating. Whether already a slavery abolitionist or a slavery apologist, Pringle presents the brutal details of Maryâ€™s physical abuse experience to spark emotions within the reader to reevaluate their views on slavery.
