London by Blake and Wordsworth

Eight years after Blake had written down his London with emotional significance, another Romantic poet Wordsworth happened to pass by the same river and composed his London as well. At that time, the Great Britain had just experienced a profound shift from feudalism to capitalist industrialization. At that historical moment left both poets deep impressions.

Both poems are of Romantic style,graceful and sentimental.The pictures showed in both poems are taken in London and beside the Thames as the title indicated.This famous city and its riverside is sure to be the main topic of the poems. Between the lines, the reader can feel as he was right at London in the 17th century.

for the lower class.For Blake, it was nothing less than a lamentation, however Wordsworth was more positive. Instead of depicting the miserable picture of life in London as Blake did, Wordsworth glorified the attractive scene of London in the dawn.He focuses less on humanity and more on the beauty of the landscape, capturing the 'sight' of London.His London is half awake and half asleep.No doubt, Wordsworth loves London at the specific moment, he praised it with 'fair','touching', 'beauty','silent', 'bright','glittering', 'beautifully', 'splendour'and 'calm'.These words form a charmful natural beauty of the industrial modern city.

It is ironic how different their perception and portrayal of London is. Blake's poem is his view on London from most of his life as he was a poor Londoner, Wordsworth's view is of London probably the only time he saw it on a coach journey with his sister.
