Loneliness And Friendship In Of Mice And Men



I believe that loneliness and friendship is the most significant theme in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. I have many examples, which I will use to support my opinion. My first example is the two main characters from the book, George and Lennie. These two are completely different both physically and mentally, but because they are both alone they actually develop a friendship with each other. My next example is Candy, whom is an old janitor working on a ranch. Candy has an elderly dog that is in very poor shape, but since he has no friends on the ranch that dog became his best friend. My final example is Crooks. Crooks is a black man at the ranch and because of that he is isolated ...

What that quote means is George and Lennie are not alone; they got each other to care for one another. Next, when George was talking to Slim, a person working at the ranch, he said, “ ‘Course Lennie’s a God damn nuisance most of the time, but you get used to goin’ around with a guy an’ you can’t get rid of him.” What that quote is saying is that even though George doesn’t like Lennie a lot he can’t get rid of him because they spent so much time together that they became very close.
My next example is a character named Candy. Candy is an old janitor working at a ranch. He has no friends there but an old dog that have been with him throughout his life. Like when the time Carlson, one of Candy’s colleague, said that the dog stinks Candy replied, “I been around him so much I never notice how he stinks.” Since Candy had the dog for so long he may not notice the dog’s smell, so that really shows how close Candy is with the dog.
