In her film Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), director Amy Heckerling uses a variety of filmic techniques to help the audience understand what is going on and to reinforce the themes of love vs. friendship, love vs. money, and friendship vs. money. For example, we can see Heckerling using costumes to show Stacy's innocence when she wears only a bottom piece of bathing suit with no top under her t-shirt when she wants to have sex with Mike. Here, having no bathing suit top on suggests that Stacy is more innocent than her actions might otherwise indicate. We can see that this suggestion of innocence is appropriate because Stacy is only a fifteen-year-old freshman in high school that is really a bit young to be having sex.
