The island that the boys unwillingly crashed upon seemed at first, to be a paradise, but as both the nature of the island and the nature of man got aquatinted, the idea of it being a paradise started to change. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, evil is found frequently in a many different forms, such as the savage ways of Jack Merridew, the unknown darkness of the island that bring forth fear into the hearts of the boys, the nature of the boys, and the destructiveness of the fire.

The second evil trait found in the savagery of Jack Merridew is unnecessary stealing. The two characters that he really stole from are Ralph and Piggy. From Ralph, Jack stole the boy followers, respect, and friends. He stole followers from Ralph by luring them into his tribe with the promise of meat and protection from the beast. He stole respect by speaking out of turn and destroying the conch, all the order the boys had. Finally, he stole friends by threatening them and also by luring them with meat and promising not to harm them if they followed Jack. From Piggy, Jack stole Piggy’s specs and his right to speak. Jack stole Piggy’s specs by breaking into the boy’s shelters and taking them. He stole his right to speak by telling him to shut up and by breaking the conch, the only way Piggy ever got a chance to say anything to the boys.
