This essay will be comparing the novel Lord of the Flies, by
William Golding, and the movie Lord of the Flies. The book is a great
adventure story and so is the movie. There are many aspects to the book
that make it great.
The novel takes place during a war. I get this impression from the
fact that they make several references to bombs and naval ships. All of
the characters in the book are British. The book’s setting is a small
island somewhere. Their plane had crashed on the island and only the boys
were alive after the crash. The whole plot of the book is based upon the
boys being stranded on the island with no authority. There are many

Lord of the Flies is full of symbolism. For example; Jack
represents the primitive nature in man and Ralph represents civilization.
Also, Piggy’s glasses represent the civilization that they are losing.
When Piggy’s glasses are taken it seems like the end of whatever
civilization they had left. Also the sows head that is speaks to Simon
represents the devil or the evil that is present in man. The Lord of the
Flies also deals with the defects in human nature. That is actually what
the book’s theme is. Human nature is in no way perfect and that somewhere
inside all of us is that wildness waiting to get out.

There were a lot of significant changes made in the film adaptation.
First, and most importantly, was the fact that there was an adult on the
island to start with. In the novel the adult figure is what symbolizes
order and civilization and that is why things got so bad on the island.
