As the boys progressively became more and more like animals, Piggy attempted to act civilized. Jack’s tribe of savages stole Piggy’s glasses in order to make a fire, leaving Piggy blind, but Piggy kept his faith in the conch and Jack’s human side by saying “I’m going to him with this conch in my hands. Look, I’m goin’ to say… I don’t ask for my glasses back, not as a favor. I don’t ask you to be a sport…not because you’re strong, but because what’s right’s right” (171). To Piggy, the conch still was the most important thing on the island because whether Jack wanted to admit it, it represented all that was left of the order and civilization from the life they once knew.
