Lord of The Flies: Evil Is An Inborn Trait

The Lord of the flies, by William Golding is a novel in which the theme that “evil is an inborn trait of mankind” is explored. A group of British boys are stranded on an Island after a plane crash, during the time of an imaginary nuclear war. On the Island we see conflict between the two main boys Jack and Ralph, who respectively represent savagery versus civilization. This has an effect on the boys throughout the novel as they delve further and further in savagery.

and obey them. After all, were not savages”. Jack’s civilized side clearly starts to fade away as the novel progresses. The boys tried making the Island a democratic place in effort to mimic the homes that they had just left.

One of the ways Golding explores this theme is through the killing of the first pig. Jack chants “kill the pig, cut her throat, spill the blood”. This suggests evil taking over as the boys are being violent and aggressive when killing the pig and they don’t care about it. This is particularly clear through Golding’s word choice. Jack talks about cutting the Pig’s throat which makes it sound like a savage action and spilling her blood which reinforces the lack of care and feeling shown towards the Pig. This part of the book shows that the boys are no longer feeling guilty about what they have done thus showing their evil traits within them.
