In the novel 'Lord of the Flies', the author illustrates that there is an inner beast in everybody, but society helps contain it. The novel takes place on an island where a bunch of young British school boys are stranded and are willing to do whatever it takes to survive; from killing pigs to even killing each other. The author develops his theme that evil is natural, through the actions of the young boys.

like a long satisfying drink". Jack and the boys were slowly losing their innocence. It was the beginning of their transformation into savagery. The killing of pigs started to become a new lifestyle for Jack and he was so proud of himself after his first kill that he wanted to do it again, because of the adrenaline rush.
The author shows how the boys go from civilized private school boys to complete savages. Jack and the boys were so uncivilized towards the end of the book that they cut off a sow's head and put it on a stick for "the beastie". They all began chanting "kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in". By this point they had lost all sanity; disconnected from society's laws and morals. They went from not being able to kill a pig to being capable of putting a female pig's head on a stick, showing how much of a drastic change the boys had gone through by not having a set of rules to live by.
