The loss of somebody very dear to you, perhaps somebody that you loved more than life itself, can be, and usually is, a tremendous blow to your happiness. It will cause extreme pain and you will feel as if the world itself has melted into a pool of liquid and no matter how hard you try you cannot constrict your hand tight enough to stop the liquid from seeping between your fingers.
The initial reaction to severe loss, in many cases, is one of denial. After all, how can this person you cherished for so long be with you the previous day and gone the next? for too long and as a result, people rarely become trapped in a maelstrom of anxiety long enough to do any personal damage to themselves. That is not the case with depression. Depression over loss can be a serious problem. In a healthy context, depression enables a person to work on issues of competence, value, and strength in the midst of loss. On the other hand, if left unchecked, it tends to work like a giant leech attached to the body, slowly draining all semblance of life from its victim. It is not easy to reach the surface, when drowning in a sea of depression. Suicidal thoughts may emerge from the deep, dark recesses of your mind and come forth to invade your sanity and run rampant throughout your everyday consciousness. In these profound cases it is important to find help from an outside source to try to conquer and exile those harmful, parasitical thoughts.
