1. King Lear

This tragedy by Shakespeare demonstrates the consequences of not recognizing true love for what it is. In King Lear two kinds of love are depicted: the love between family members on the one hand, and romantic love on the other. Both are demonstrated to be both true and false in the play.

1. False Love

False Love is embodied primarily by Lear's two daughters, Regan and Goneril. When their father demands a declaration of love, the two girls offer grand declarations of love, which are also however false. These declarations win them the promised prize of land and marriage to foremost ...

eventually realizes, the love of these two daughters is false in every respect. His failure to realize the truth drives him to insanity and ultimate death.

2. True Love

In contrast to her sisters, Cordelia, the youngest and her father's favorite, is the embodiment of the honesty of true love. Thus she refuses to lie in the way her sisters did. She is honest about her love. When her turn comes, she tells her father:

"You have begot me, bred me, loved me: I
Return those duties back as are right fit,
Obey you, love you, and most honour you." (Act 1; Sc. I)

In short, Cordelia refuses to admit anything other than fitting daughterly love for her father. This is then also the only love that proves itself true to the very end. Cordelia takes in her father when he is driven insane by the false actions of his other daughters.
