In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth theme and imagery are hopelessly interwoven in an elaborate, intricate nature that only increases in complexity as the play progresses. Three central themes/recurring images in the play are those of blood, clothing and darkness. Only through careful examination of the images do the connections become evident and can understanding of their significance be achieved.
The image of blood is by far the most frequently repeated in the play. Blood is used to great effect to stow the extent of the guilt felt by the Macbeths. becomes obvious. Macbeth tries to justify his evil by using the rationale that it is just as easy to continue the killing as it is to stop it. Macbeth seems to be fascinated with blood. In act 3, scene 4 the word blood is used 4 times in 6 lines (151-157). Although the blood imagery is used mostly to show Macbeth’s deranged state, lines such as “It will have blood, they say; blood will have blood.” (III, 4. 151) testify that Macbeth still has enough of a grip on reality that he is ultimately in control of his destiny and that makes him a truly tragic figure. Shakespeare also uses blood imagery to give us insight into Macbeth’s character. Images such as that of Macbeth watching his bloodstained hand dye the whole green ocean red display Macbeth’s lucid imagination, which couples with his guilt and eventually leads to his death.
