William Shakespeare wrote “Macbeth” in 1606 during the reign of King James I. The Gunpowder Plot had happened just the year before and Shakespeare wrote “Macbeth” to flatter the King after he was found to have connections to one of the plotters.

The first performance of “Macbeth” was at Hampton Court before James. Shakespeare had the job of portraying through Macbeth himself that killing the king would only bring bad things.

Guy Fawkes who was the ring leader of the plot was portrayed as Macbeth himself in the play because Fawkes was one of James’s favourites just as Macbeth would have been one of Duncan’s favourites. To commemorate the unveiling of the crime, James had a special medal created that pictured a snake in amongst flowers. Shakespeare includes this in the play when Lady Macbeth tells her husband to “Look like th’innocent flower, / But be the serpent under’t.”

In the beginning of the play, Macbeth was loyal to Duncan and in 1606 men were seen as respectable leaders that were duty-bound to the state to fight for the king. A man was expected to be mentally and physically strong, in the beginning when Macbeth kills Duncan he is seen to be distressed. “Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor / Shall sleep no more.” This suggests that Macbeth has an extremely guilty conscience concerning his recent act ...
