Around Machiavelli’s time the papacy held much of the European power. Many popes held notoriously corrupt positions and mismanaged the entirety of Western Europe. They were the dictators during the Italian Renaissance. Not just religiously, but politically, militarily, and socially. They taxed and sent off leagues of soldiers to kill all people and to command all land of differing religious or political association. There was no separation between church and state as the inhabitants of today’s West have come to expect.

was dismissed from his position and retired to San Casciano. Being charged with conspiracy, he was tortured but then released when Giovanni de Medici was elected to the papacy. He returned to San Casciano and wrote The Prince.
Machiavelli wrote The Prince to Giovanni de Medici as advice on how to rule and conquer peoples. Unfortunately his political and social genius was not realized for years to come and all he had worked for had gone down the drain. Italy fell leaving only the memory of what once was. Why Machiavelli was compelled to give a book of advice to his companion in the papacy was that he had seen many rulers attempt to expand their powers and fail. With popes constantly sending warriors off on crusades to conquer opposing religious sects, Machiavelli noticed many mistakes in their conquests and thought out how to improve tactics and permanently retain newly ruled territories.
