The fact that I have two sisters and no brothers has definitely shaped my life in a positive way. I would have had a very different life if I had a brother. The Indian culture is based on very distinct roles for men and women. I have witnessed my cousins and family friends being subject to expectations as to how girls and boys should act. I disagree strongly with the idea that boys are taught to exhibit dominant behaviors such as strength development and competitiveness while girls are taught to be passive, emotional and talkative. confidence, etc. Bearing these qualities has served as a hindrance to being accepted by my society. Fortunately, my parents never stuck to the traditional rules for girls. We were taught how to do everything that a boy does, probably because we don't have a brother.
Although I strongly disagree with the role girls and boys are expected to play in society I do embrace one particular aspect of it. The fact the in the Indian culture a woman is supposed to completely dedicate her life to her family is questionable. Nonetheless, the fact that many women, including myself, are able to believe that their professional life is secondary to their families is admirable. I believe that this is a positive aspect of gendered scripts and one that I support. Although, I do believe that men should feel the same way.
