In "The Yellow Wallpaper" the main character, who later in the story assumes the name Jane, is struggling with her husband diagnoses for her case of "temporary nervous depression" (Gilman 5). In the 1800s women were employed, as wives, to care for children and cook the meals. Women listened and obeyed their husbands, as the man knew no wrong. Jane believes that "excitement and change" (Gilman 10) would be beneficial to her health, but her husband, John, prescribes rest and seclusion from the rest of the world - so she listens to the ever-powerful male voice. The duration of her rest prescription is to be carried out in a yellow-wallpapered room that Jane describes as "smouldering unclean" (Gilman 30). Surely a room of such putrid surrounding would not cure a disorder of hysterical tendency, but provoke and worsen the disorder? reader is left with an uncertainty to whether or not Jig will have an abortion - this uncertainty is exactly what Jig feels. Through the story Jig's tone about feeling "i feel fine, there is nothing wrong with me" (Consigny 55) influences the reader to understand that Jig believes the baby is not an unwanted white elephant, but something Jig truly wants to keep. Although, the presence of an over - powering male manipulator that is encouraging an abortion has Jig confused at what she really wants.
