Having identified Safeway’s main competitors (Tesco and Asda), there are numerous aspects of company performance which need addressing and maintaining in order to remain within the “elite” bracket of this fiercely competitive market.
Before we look at these areas in more detail, it is important to note a recent event which has a great effect on this assignment. The recent merger between Asda and the Kingfisher Group plc has created the largest supermarket chain in the country, dwarfing the likes of Tesco and ourselves. A wider range of products and services will provide Safeway with a more powerful “pulling” ability, thus increasing sales and profits:

Clothing is an area of growth within supermarkets – due to their size, large supermarkets are able to purchase garments in large quantities, thus retailing them at a great discount compared to high street stores. Safeway have entered this area through children’s clothing, but should consider progressing to a fuller range.

Financial services seem to have developed within supermarkets – again, the size of the companies enables them to provide plans such as the “PEP” and the “ISA” with competitive interest rates and returns. Again, the likes of Tesco and Marks and Spencer have already addressed this – Safeway have introduced a basic savings account for their customers, but there is opportunity for expansion in this market.
