Manipulation Deception and Revenge

In the short story "The Cast of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe revenge, manipulation and deception is the overall plot. The narrator begins toe story by describing how Fortunato has hurt him. Fortunato previously insulted the narrator so he must get revenge. The story depicts how the narrator first manipulates Fortunato and with deception gets revenge on him.

no; I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement." (E.A Poe Kirszner and Mandell p. 361). The narrator had Fortunato hook line and sinker from that point on. Fortunato insisted that he had no engagement to attend to. He would gladly be the taster of the Amontillado.
The narrator also used deception in his plot against Fortunato. "The narrator stated "There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time. I had told them that I should not return until the morning and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned" (E.A. Poe Kirszner and Mandell p. 361). The narrator used deception in this instance to insure no witness to the event.
The narrator finally gets his revenge on Fortunato. Fortunato by that time was pretty intoxicated from drinking the Amontillado along the way." ...
