Many Americans do not realize exactly how much money is wasted every year on enforcing marijuana laws. More than half of the prison population in most states consists of petty marijuana users, most of whom are merely college students or sick adults who use marijuana to relax or feel better, just as many Americans use alcohol, tobacco, or any other controversial substance. Jail is not the only aspect of these anti-marijuana laws that is ruining the economy, but the drug enforcement agency spends over ten billion dollars enforcing them each year.
