nonstop for a week and they would only die from carbon monoxide poisoning. In order to overdose on THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, one would need to smoke about 40,000 times the intoxication level. Alchohol overdose occurs when 5-10 time the intoxication level is consumed.
So why is such a relatively safe drug illegal? The reality is that the American marijuana prohibition has only been around since 1937, prior to which marijuana was used commonly. Evidence of the inhalation of cannabis smoke can be found as early as the 3rd millennium BCE. Even the drafts of the Constitution and Declaration Of Independence were printed on hemp paper. The history behind the prohibition is that in 1930, the federal government founded the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN), led by Commissioner Harry Anslinger. Marijuana smokers in this country aren't any different from their nonsmoking neighbors, except for the simple marijuana use.
