Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America, only behind alcohol and tobacco, and has been used by nearly 100 million Americans. Marijuana is much less of a health threat when compared to alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning and more than 400,000 deaths each year are caused by tobacco smoking. Cannabis, or marijuana, is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose. The prestigious European medical journal, The Lancet, says "The smoking of cannabis, even long-term, is not harmful to health. ... So why is such a relatively safe drug illegal? The reality is that the American marijuana prohibition has only been around since 1937, prior to which marijuana was used commonly.
